Miami Author Wins Literary Award

MIAMI (Nov. 13, 2006) – The Florida Writers Association awarded Miami-based author David Pereda second place in the 2006 Royal Palm Literary Awards for his novel, Beyond Midnight in America.

The book, scheduled for publication next year, is about a successful Miami architect who fled Cuba during the Mariel boatlift and reluctantly returns to his native country to unravel a 25-year-old family secret.

Pereda, a MENSA member, said he was thrilled to receive the award.

”When I abandoned a thriving consulting practice and decided to concentrate solely on my literary career, I set several goals for myself, among them to be an award-winning writer,” Pereda said from his home on Brickell Avenue. “When I heard the news this weekend, I felt validated.”

The award, which includes money and promotion through the Florida Writers Association’s online and print publications, was announced during the FWA’s annual conference held in Orlando this weekend.

Pereda is the author of Havana Confidential, The Highest Hurdle, Who Killed Fidel Castro? and the recently-released Getting Filthy Rich. Before devoting full-time to his writing career, the Cuban native enjoyed a distinguished career as a global business consultant while competing in international equestrian and track and field competitions.

Pereda will be signing books at the Miami Book Fair this Saturday between 10 AM and Noon.

In addition to a book tour and writing his next novel, Pereda has been shopping the movie rights to his first novel Havana Confidential with a well-known Hollywood film producer.
