Welcome to my country porch!
So much has happened since my last newsletter -- where to
begin?
The biggest news is our recent move from the shimmering
waters of Biscayne Bay to the imposing Blue Ridge Mountains
of Western North Carolina, which you can read more about
below.
And although it might be old news, I want to salute my
favorite college basketball team, the Univ. of Fla., who
won the national championship. Go, Gators!
And -- oh, yes -- I won another literary award, this time
for my forthcoming thriller, Who Killed Fidel Castro?
In this Issue
Let's talk ...
ASHEVILLE, NC
BOOK AWARD
MY NEW AGENT

ASHEVILLE, NC

A career opportunity for my wife, Mariate, and a chance to
trade the slick sophistication of South Florida and well-
known Miami Attitude for the country atmosphere of Western
Carolina and friendliness of the Asheville citizens brought
a welcome change and new address.
People here say "Sir" and "Ma'am" and actually smile.
Springtime in the Blue Ridge Mountains is breathtaking. The
weather is sunny and balmy, and the "critters" are
restless. According to the neighborhood grapevine, bears
entered a nearby home through a window, while the
homeowners were watching CSI: Miami, and tried to eat the
shrimp gumbo cooking on the stove. Well, I have news for
those bears -- no one is going to eat the delicious gumbo
my wife makes except me!
We have a new cat named Davie, who showed up one day and
adopted us. As you can see in the photo, he's gun- metal
gray, has bright- green eyes and is adored by my youngest
daughter, Sophia.
We also have a raccoon that looks like Robin Hood and
visits us every night to steal Davie's food. Nightingales
sing entire arias every night , and cardinals fly around
through the woods, chirping and skirting the gang of
hooligan crows.
Did I mention this was the country? Well it is, and I love
it.

BOOK AWARD
Indie Award

When we got to Asheville, after 14 hours on the road and
three days without e-mail, I checked my messages and had
the totally unexpected and incredibly pleasant surprise
that the manuscript of Who Killed Fidel Castro? was an
award-winning finalist in the mystery/suspense/thriller
category of the National Indie Excellence 2007 Book Awards.
The competition is one of the largest of its kind with more
than 700 entrants.
You can read more about it on my Web site
www.davidpereda.com.
A publicity and marketing campaign is underway and will
continue throughout early June. The award means national
media exposure and in-your-face notice with the major
publishing houses, including those attending the mother of
all book shows, Book Expo America in NYC the first week in
June.
This is the second award in six months that I've won -- one
for each of my two most recent books. Thanks to all of you
who have supported my dream of becoming an author. And for
those of you who have a book inside of you, start writing!
More about the Award

MY NEW AGENT

Concurrently with winning the award, two agents from
established literary agencies offered to represent my
political thriller, Who Killed Fidel Castro? I chose the
one who better suited my personality and writing style. We
are in the process of submitting the manuscript to
publishers. I'll let you know how it goes.
Simultaneously, I met with an agent from one of the top
literary agencies in the country who reviewed the
manuscript of Beyond Midnight. She liked what she saw and
asked to see more. I will let you know how that goes, too.

Now that I'm settled, I'm available for book readings and
book signings. If you are interested in arranging or
attending an event, e-mail my publicist, Doris, at
dorisbloods@earthlink.net. If you include wine, I'll be
sure to come!
And speaking of wine, my most recent column just appeared
in "Pasajero" magazine.

Let's talk ...

May has three important dates: Mother's Day, (I hope all
the mommies had a good day) Memorial Day (please drive
safely) and the NBA Championship, which also can be
hazrdous, if you play for one of the teams in the finals.
Steve Nash from the Suns ended up with a broken nose after
a head-on collision with Tony Parker of the Spurs; Manu
Ginobili got poked in the eye and is sporting a trendy
black eye; and Flip Murray of the Pistons must be singing
soprano right now after the karate chop Kirk Hinrich of the
Bulls delivered to his groin recently.
And I thought the assasins in my books were ruthless!

I hope you'll check out my Web site. We've updated it
recently with new information, including a quiz to test
your knowledge on my new hometown. Let me know how you did!
As usual, I'll send an autographed book to the first person
with the correct answers.
